Fifth Sunday of EASTER

General.  This Sunday recalls the mystery of redemption when the Son of God belittled himself and he underwent death on the Cross, a scandal for pious Jews and a folly for intellectual Greeks. For this foolishness, the Father has raised him on high and made him a victorious king on all creation, the same way as God has made us victorious when with the help of His Son we override sin and He breathes into us His eternal life.

Acts of the Apostles.  When Saul recognized Jesus and converted his heart to God, he became one with Christ, spoke in his name and also underwent suffering the same way he did. This is the share of love whoever walks in Christ’s steps partakes of, becoming one with him in all.

First Epistle of St John.  Our main commandment is to believe in the saving name of Jesus so that he might come to dwell within us and we within him. If we have the spirit of the risen Christ within us, we should entertain no difficulty in fulfilling all that which pleases him.

St John.  The Christian can do much fruit if only he remains united with Jesus, the true vine. Jesus tells us very clearly that without him, we cannot do anything, and that if we are his disciples the Father’s name is further highly glorified.
