Feast of the Body and Blood |
of Our Lord Jesus Christ |
|
General. Today’s liturgy is in remembrance of the Body and Blood of
Our Lord Jesus Christ in a more solemn manner than we could have done on
Maundy Thursday when this memorial originated and when there was greater
emphasis on the Passion and Death through which Jesus had to pass. The
Sequence preceding the Gospel story reminds us that in this meal we call the
Eucharist, we should uplift our praise to the King who gave us His Body as
life-giving bread. |
|
Exodus. The Jewish
people are ready to do anything which the Lord bids them. The Pact between
God and His people is sealed with that Blood which in the redemption event is
shed for the salvation of all persons within creation. |
|
Hebrews. On being redeemed by Christ with his holy blood, we also
became Sons of God, and thus God’s inheritors. This would cause us to realise
that our God is a living God, and we would thus set aside from us all
sinfulness and accompanying death so that we migtht live the same way He does. |
|
St
Mark. Jesus is here
giving his Body and Blood for the redemption of humanity. It was this same
blood which later had to be shed for the salvation of the whole of human
creation throughout the world. |
