Ascension Day

General.  Today’s solemn remembrance is of the Ascension of Our Lord Jesus Christ into heaven. As His Church, we have our body solidly standing on this earth while our head, Christ, is to be found in heaven. He now stands for evermore on the righthand side of the Father interceding on our behalf. Through this we are aware that if we have truly risen from the dead with Christ, we should now be seeking and thinking of heavenly things and no longer those of this earth.

Acts of the Apostles.  Shortly before Jesus ascended into heaven, he told the apostles to wait for the arrival of the Holy Spirit Who is the promise of the Father. Jesus reminds us of our Baptism for the forgiveness of sins which every christian receives through the Holy Spirit. Indeed, it is this Baptism which seals our faith.

Ephesians. St Paul tells the Ephesians that God arose Jesus from the dead since he had obeyed His Will, and Christ now stands on the righthand side of the Father in the kingdom of heaven, having placed beneath him all creation. This is also the hope of the christian calling if only we accept Christ as Our Lord..

A. St Matthew. Jesus tells us quite clearly that the christian is a person who believes in him and who is baptized. The spirit which the christian receives in baptism will then encourage him to go out anywhere into the whole world to spread the Good Tidings and the wonders which God has worked through him.

B. St Mark. Jesus bid his last farewell to the apostles sending them spread the Gospel to all nations and to proclaim salvation through baptism which opens the way to live everlasting. Signs and wonders were to accompany them, so that the glory of the Father may be seen through them. That same urge ought also to accompany Christians who understand the real meaning of their Baptism.

C. St Luke. Jesus blesses his disciples before his departure from them telling them that his mission had been accomplished now that he had risen from the dead. It was up to them now to spread the message of divine love, namely the forgiveness of sins for all those who believe. They were to wait until being vested with power from on high and they meanwhile spent their time in constant prayer in the temple in Jerusalem.
