Ascension Day |
|
General. Today’s solemn remembrance is of the Ascension of Our Lord
Jesus Christ into heaven. As His Church, we have our body solidly standing on
this earth while our head, Christ, is to be found in heaven. He now stands for
evermore on the righthand side of the Father interceding on our behalf.
Through this we are aware that if we have truly risen from the dead with
Christ, we should now be seeking and thinking of heavenly things and no
longer those of this earth. |

Acts
of the Apostles. Shortly before Jesus ascended into
heaven, he told the apostles to wait for the arrival of the Holy Spirit Who
is the promise of the Father. Jesus reminds us of our Baptism for the
forgiveness of sins which every christian receives through the Holy Spirit.
Indeed, it is this Baptism which seals our faith. |

Ephesians. |

A.
St Matthew. Jesus tells us quite clearly that the christian is a
person who believes in him and who is baptized. The spirit which the
christian receives in baptism will then encourage him to go out anywhere into
the whole world to spread the Good Tidings and the wonders which God has
worked through him. |

B.
St Mark. Jesus bid his last farewell to the apostles sending them
spread the Gospel to all nations and to proclaim salvation through baptism
which opens the way to live everlasting. Signs and wonders were to accompany
them, so that the glory of the Father may be seen through them. That same
urge ought also to accompany Christians who understand the real meaning of
their Baptism. |

C.
St Luke. Jesus blesses his disciples before his departure from
them telling them that his mission had been accomplished now that he had
risen from the dead. It was up to them now to spread the message of divine
love, namely the forgiveness of sins for all those who believe. They were to
wait until being vested with power from on high and they meanwhile spent
their time in constant prayer in the temple in |
