Homily Points

Pentecost Sunday

General.  On this day we recall the descending of the Holy Spirit on the apostles. Like Redemption, the coming of the Holy Spirit was an event which happened for that time and for all times to come. It is in that way that the Spirit of God fills the whole world and embraces all things with that same love which also filled us. It is for that very reason that we pine for the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts that we may have the zeal to call out “Abba, Father”.

Acts of the Apostles.  In the recount of the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles we witness their coming out from the frightened persons they were at the time so that with great courage they would preach about Jesus Christ risen from the dead and Saviour of all peoples. They also speak out about the wonders which God has wrought in them.

First Epistle to the Corinthians. Whosoever receives within him the Holy Spirit of God could recognize Jesus as his Lord and of the whole creation which has faith. With our baptism in one spirit, we now belong to a universal family which is the Church of Christ, Lord and Saviour of all.

St John. When during Eastertide Jesus appeared to his apostles who were locked up in the upper house in Jerusalem, he greeted them giving them his peace. The apostles rejoiced and Jesus sent them out to preach the Good Tidings and to baptize all nations.
